I always ask myself: What is a person? What does it mean to be human? Maybe they think my next film is about cruelty again, in fact this violence is only a reflection of who we are or what is in us, to some extent - Kim Ki-duk
With the help of the festival, I was able to see Kim Ki-duk's new work on the big screen once again. This is the film that says the loudest about Kim.
I think the film chooses the most radical way to convey the main message. In it the characters have removed all moral or legal obstacles, there is no limit: rape, murder, cannibalism as a whole create a horrible picture.
This is the director who made the film
Spring, summer, autumn, winter… and created spring again? - I heard such an opinion after the end of the film, I was a little surprised. Yes it is, though louder, more direct and bolder.
I admit I did not expect such radicalization either, but before entering the cinema hall I knew for sure that Kim's film would not be just a few minutes into the story and it would cause more noise in me and not only that, it would definitely try to evoke emotion in the whole society.
Psychologically "poisoned" people after leaving the hall jokingly warned each other "be careful not to eat each other" This is already a big trace of Kim's influence and a small victory.
From the beginning to the end of the film, the way is shown how the characters lose small but still existing human qualities and how they become wild and beastly "animals" for whom the survival instinct and basic needs are most important.
At the very beginning of the film, questions arise and a comic picture is drawn when we learn that the ship of the old military battalion has been converted into a cruise ship and is going to the sea only for tourist purposes.
Strange and confusing as the couple chooses, spending their honeymoon on a God-forgotten ship is probably the most foolish decision. A place where the smell of blood can be felt even in the air would not really be attractive to a normal person however if we consider that none of the passengers on the ship have a normal, human face so in the whole picture of the composition this pair also fits perfectly.
Another obvious comic reference is the face of the captain in the film. He warns passengers that a safe journey awaits them and they will return home in peace but if we turn a blind eye to the community aboard the ship such expectations will completely disappear. I do not think the best travelers were prostitutes, swindlers, gangsters or cruel politicians.
Of course such a society only adds dirt to the ship, all behave worse than each other, and only the primary wild desires awaken in them. The next day, the "sinners" chosen by Kim Duke on one of the ships wake up to a new reality. Where they no longer have the sea, nor the destination, and are completely lost in space
Because of the panic, the unbearable fear of death, the wild feeling of hunger, each passenger of the ship loses his individual look and begins to act on the instincts of natural survival. The story line of the film goes to the point where we witness the creation of a new world…
